Apes, idiots and hot air!
I know I promised to be nice and "socially correct", but I can't help it when I see stupidity running rampant. Back in the "old" days, if we know a certain DJ is way more polished and superior in every department imaginable, we wouldn't even dream of introducing ourselves as DJs, and we wouldn't have the balls to showcase ourselves, let alone ask them to play with us back-to-back. We knew where we stood and we respected the fact that there's always someone better. But today, it's a different thing altogether. DJs who can hardly mix effortlessly are talking louder (i.e. bull crap) than the DJs that can mix seamlessly... blindfolded while downing a tray of Sex-On-The-Beach and playing poker all at the same time! Much as I'm considered a veteran, I still have peers that I look up to and respect very much. They pathed the way. Kids today simply just don't get it at all. To put it bluntly... YOU SUCK AND I CAN MIX BETTER THAN YOU. SO CHECK THE ARROGANCE AT THE DOOR. I don't give a flying fuck, to be honest!
Also, funny thing is that when one looks for a mentor, you'd expect the mentor to be someone who has a string of achievement, successes, experience and reputation. i.e. Andrew Chow, Aldrin...
But no... nowadays, eager beavers who can hardly hold a mix decently are already becoming "instructors". What the hell is wrong with the world nowadays? Firstly, they not only lack the necessary skills, they also lack the years of experience and know-how. Most importantly, they suck and they rank right at the bottom of the seabed. Period. So what kind of students you get?
Dumb and dumber!
Thus the decline of the DJ culture as we know it. How fucked-up is that? Personally, some of these "DJs" are not ready yet to even play out to the public. It's actually a miracle how some of them actually score gigs. It's really painful listening to some of them. Speaking of which, I need to go and shit now.
Oh... horrors?

You will feel more competent to express your mental and emotional states in an open way, which causes you to be more direct and spontaneous in your sentimental relationships and, especially, with your family. If you usually are shy, it is a good time to exercise emotional advantage, self-confidence and direct expression of your emotional states.
Facebook... no poking!
I'm like on FACEBOOK now. What a slow starter, eh? Well, at least I'm not as tech-unsavvy and out-of-sync. Better not-so-late then never. I'm now so IN or what? Ahahahaha! See my page HERE. So many applications and stuff. Wahoo! Cheap thrill. But seriously, Friendster is like so... last millennium. MySpace is like so pointlessly filled with spam and what-nots that it has gotten so irritating to even bother.
Rain drops keep falling on my head...
It's rainy like rhinos and elephants. Wish I could stay in bed and not go to work. Then again, no money, no honey. Ahahahahahaha! So you gotta bite the bullet and do what you gotta do, you know?

Tune currently playing as I'm preparing to leave home... Anarcrusan's "On My Mind". Soothing proggy stuff. God, I miss the sound of crackling vinyl...
An Ableton Weekend...
Finally completed a 70-min-plus Ableton mix of 25 tracks... each lasting about 3 minutes each with the usual slicing, dicing, layering and drop-in's. Started the mapping and shit since Sunday noon... finalized and "flattening" the mix as I type this entry. If I had used my own stupid PC laptop, with the amount of stress (and hours) I was pushing the software, it would've ended up like the above picture. Thankfully, I managed to get my hands on a 3-year-old "suped-up" PowerMac for loan over the weekend.
Anyway, a handful of the promotional CD will be given out randomly at this coming Friday's party (see below). Sorry, no Tiesto tunes or "pretentious dirty trance" inside... wahahahaha!
"The grabbing hands, grab all they can..."
Included in it are some of the less obvious trance names that I've been canning for the longest time; like M.I.D.O.R., John O'Callaghan, Greg Downey, Bryan Kearney, Steve Birch, Activa and Kimoto Lopez. I didn't want it to be promo bursting of "big" tunes that people either have heard of or already know. The whole point is for it be a platform for you to sample the other good stuff that are otherwise ignored just because the "big names" don't play them. Maybe it's time trance went back to the underground... screw the polls!

Guess what's coming out on the Sony PSP? Ableton!!! FUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKK YEAAAHH!!! Now I really need to go buy more 4GB memory sticks. Jeez whiz... CDRs are really on the way out, aren't there? In the near future, clubs and DJs will be equipped with just a bunch of portable hard-drives, some flash cards and memory sticks. Vinyls? Sorry, come again? I vaguely remember them... :p
********************Started work on a new Ableton promotional megamix. 25% done. Hopefully can be completed before this Friday's party and have a bunch to pass out to the punters...
:) *sweat*********************Yesterday, I was posed this question. What makes a good DJ? A showboater, a technical one or a purist? Well, a purist can fuck off for all I care. For a DJ that's technically tight and confident, he/she have all the time in the world to showboat. So does showmanship and flair impress me at all? Not a single bit. I think it's over-rated. It doesn't make any DJ great because he/she has flair. The chimpanzees in the zoo have flair too, but does that make them DJs? No. Technical brilliance on the other hand, is about sheer hardwork, effort, creativity and natural skills. Personally, anyone can be a monkey in the DJ booth but when it comes to good mixing of tunes, that's what seperates the heavyweights from the "trying-to-be's".
Thus I was never impress with the hype surrounding the likes of Tiesto. He can't even string two tracks together without making a mess (harmonically and tempo-wise). And I for one don't enjoy listening to bad mixing. I don't have the patience for it and I don't find it funny either. It took me THREE years after learning on my own what mixing was about before I scored my first gig. Simply because I wanted to be 101% sure that I'll not fuck-up in the mixing department. In those days, every one of my peers trained hard to one-up each other. From bar-mixing to tricks, from harmonic phasing to scratching, from seamless mixing to megamixing. Nowadays, the reason the scene is so fucked-up is because we have jabronis who think they're DJs just because they can barely string a couple of big tunes together, swing their arms in the air and jump around as if they have ants in their pants. They've taking the art, which some of us take very seriously, and made a complete mockery out of it.
Thank you, bloody buttholes! I think I should be less diplomatic from now on and say you suck instead of giving you a pretentious thumbs-up. And don't get me started with those "Start/Stop" DJs. If any of you're reading this and think that it's directed at you, please lock yourself up for like 3 years or so, polish up your craft before you step back into a DJ booth. Maybe then you'll earn some respect from us. Last thing anyone really wants to see is a retarded homo-sapien behind the decks mixing like you're having diarrhoea . So there! I said it! I've finally got it off my chest. Sorry if the brutal truth hurts anyone's over-sized egos. Hopefully this will pull some of you back to earth, and to realise that some people are not really cut out for it. But if you still insist otherwise, try reading...
And when all fails and you really cannot-make-it but still have the sickening urge for attention, fame and what-nots, fret not because you can then take those monkeying antics and try your hand at being complete idiots... watch the following, it might help. Hahahahaha!
Dirty? WTF?
Listening to some promos now... just realise how fucking retarded most electro house stuff really is... technically from the production aspect of it... 'nuff said. Go fuck yourself if you think otherwise. It's a matter of cranking up the analogue racks to squelch at peak / distortion levels. Like that's so difficult. The brat-from-hell does that everyday... with non-electronical appliances! To be honest, what's the deal with calling it "dirty"? Oh yeah, by the sounds of it, some of them do sound like rubbish; thereby being termed as "dirty". Geddit? Like seriously, there's actually a tune called "Get Dumb". I think it's supposed to be an oxymoronic joke or something because you really need to be a fucking retard to "appreciate" a tune that's entitled as such.
Now where the hell is my "white trash" tee? It's going to be so appropriate. Hahahaha!
Here's a filthy marketing concept...
Excuse me but at this stage, I'm moving towards getting back to doing some proper production work. So excuse me if almost every fuck thing I hear sounds like a mindless drone to me. Music for life? Don't talk to me about music, or the "scene", or what not!!! Not now, please. Not ever. I just want my MacBook. Why? Don't really know yet. Wahahahaha! Stay tuned then.
And I also wonder why the fuck I sometimes bother to entertain or even listen to people who continue to be fucking ignorant, completely out-of-sync but yet still think that they know a hell lot when they're in their own little fantasy world? As if I'm already not wasting enough time. The nbext time, if any of you get mono-syllable, or really superficial response or zero attention from me, please acknowledge the fact that you've managed to creep down the evolution ladder... into a retarded stage called "ignoranus". Shut up and spare me the boredom.
"Check your enthusiasm!"
Lastly... I HATE PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT TRUTHFUL!
Promise to myself...
Before the end of this year...
MacBook running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger
with Intel Core 2 Duo processor at 2.16GHz
and this...
... because CDRs are on the way out,
and I need to get back to some proper production work.
Trust no one!
Just realised that "SOME PEOPLE"
have nothing better else to do...
...but to intrude.
Don't wish to say more.
Yesterday didn't go, you know?
Did not go to Fish & Co. yesterday as planned. Instead ate a very filling dinner at Soup Restaurant (DFS). Love the ginseng soup. I've got to learn how to make "double-boiled" soups. Damn, it's so hard to keep my distance and emotions in check. Anyway, ended up shopping at Far East Plaza. I hate to say this but I finally understand what shopping therapy means. Ended up buying a fucking hilarious "beam-me-up" slogan tee. I need to look for my "fuck-off-i'm-mixing" and my "i-see-stupid-people" tees... for obvious reasons, especially for those in-the-know.
What's the bad thing about taking a break from work? Going back to work. Hahahahaha! Somehow, we all groan when we come back down to earth. Gravity sucks. But it's all cool, whatever situation we're in right now... everything happens for a reason that leads to a bigger scheme of things. Yeah... riiiigght! Haha!
Paul van Dyk's "In Between" album is in the stores now. Not to be bias because he's a personal friend but it's been awhile since I heard any electronic stuff that left me wanting more... despite his collaboration with Pussycat Dolls. I think I'll go check out the new Markus Schulz album as well. His last one was MEMORABLE.
TV series fans of Prison Break... Season 3 starts 17 September. I hope Michael's plan to "make all of this right" ends once and for all with this season. It's getting damn tiring and bordering on stale territory! Heroes return with Season 2 on 24 September. Both series will not be aired locally just as yet, because our local network is SLOW and would rather broadcast boring "reality shows". So technically if you manage to download the TV screeners from the US, you're NOT YET depriving the local licensee's "potential profit capacity". They only have themselves to blame for being not in tuned with trends and preferences. They think they know, but they know NOTHING. Like what else is new? And so the story goes, di da di, di da di... :p
And now, the retro-pop video of the week... I don't care if you know it or not though. Hahaha! It's one of the artistes that I managed when joined the record industry. She says "that's gooorrgeous" a lot and is quite airy. But was really a blast to handle her tour here a few years back. Jennifer Paige...
Oh, for those that have known me back then and realise that I'm a much different person now in terms of principles and values, you're right on the money. Experiences and life lessons change people. Sorry I can never be who I was ever again. I don't wish to revisit or revive... retro is out. And I really hate to be scruntized. Sorry if I'm less approachable or friendly... I simply don't trust anyone now. Especially rats! Afterall, I'm just an "aftermath of a disaster".
p/s I hate my fucking neighbour from Indian. The hellspawn was banging a wooden spoon on a metal rich plate from morning till noon. When I went over to tell them off, the reply was, as with previous times, "he's just a boy". Fuck you understand? I swear the boy's a retard.
It was a sad day today but...
Tomorrow going, you know?GOD! I NEED A DRINK AND A SMOKE REAL BAD!So many years on and still this song does me in every single time, regardless of what state of mind I'm in...
"Here I am, I'm thinking again
I think too much and I feel too much
Unwisely connecting, preserving and coaxing
It wasn't a drama though I'm mellowing out
Bit by bit and year by year
But I think I went
Deeper than just an affair
Deeper..."
Lyrics by Chris Ho
Emo trance... please come back!
"we made such sweet love..."
Currently helping Progressions to revamp their internet radio. No more repeated sets and stuff. Still going through some of the materials at hand. Came across this tune that completely brought me back to the days when trance meant something to me. It was not about stereotyped hands-in-the-air synth melodies or hard banging drum loops. The trance of today lacks one thing. "EMO" lyrics and the ability to affect your mood in a melancholic way. It's not the first time I heard this tune but it completely got me on repeated listens. Maybe it's because I relate to it? "I don't want to fall anymore..."
LISTEN to it HERE. It's the first tune of the mix.
Jonas Steur feat. Jennifer Rene
Fall To Pieces
Needing a reason for being stuck in this seemingly
Demeaning whirlwhind of ride with you
Oh ya I do
Longer than faster I try to decide what you're after
A disaster
Is that what you put me through?
Oh ya you do
I'm not free love
So when you leave take the time you need
Cause I'll be gone
So don't come to me and beg to plead
I'm not free love
So when you leave take the time you need
Cause I'll be gone
What you're about to say
Searching for truth in this twisted environment
I can't believe that I once was inspired by you
But I'll be ok
Poetry means nothing when you love me and leave
To just disappear one day then wear your heart on your sleeve
Do you know what I'm worth?
What do you see?
I'm not free love
So when you leave take the time you need
Cause I'll be gone
So don't come to me and beg to plead
I'm not free love
So when you leave take the time you need
Cause I'll be gone
What you're about to say
I don't wanna know
I don't wanna know
I don't wanna fall to pieces
I don't wanna fall at all so...
What you're about to say
I don't wanna know
I don't wanna know
I don't wanna fall to pieces.
I don't wanna fall at all so...
Go away
Just go
I don't wanna fall anymore
Zzzzz... zombie!
I didn't go fishing as planned. While packing some gear, it started to rain heavily. I crept into bed and fell asleep till now. Considering my physical and mental state, I'm not surprised. Really tired at both levels. Then again, even if I did go, there isn't anyone to hook the "live" prawn bait onto my hook. Hahaha! I'm squirmish, ok?
Really can't get myself to work on the promo mix CD that I wanted to. I doubt I'll be able to do anything constructive and creatively interesting for a few months at least. Need to play one huge-ass over-the-roof gig soon to keep the interest going. I'll ring my Indonesian agent and see what he can hook me up with regionally.
I'll go eat my late dinner, take a shower and go back to sleep again. I may have a dinner date tomorrow. So that's one thing promising this week :)
Good night, all!
Come bite my line!
Cool weather. Going to Paris Ris to fish now...
... it's been a very long while!
And I need the serenity to think things through.
Questions for the week :
Since South Park's broadcast and master copyright is not represented here by any network or distributor, does it mean it's LEGAL to download the episodes for personal viewing and not get dragged into courts? Likewise the "gay-comedy" Will & Grace. The lesbian sitcom "The L-Word"... and so forth. If the US is showing, say the new season of "Prison Break" before it's screen on our television network... how? I mean, you can't seriously blame the consumers for our television broadcaster dropping viewership, their failure to attain rights to air shows concurrently with their US counterparts and their lack of understanding the repercussions of HDTV. That's what you get when you have old-farts running the show...
******************** On a completely different mode, just letting a little cat out of the bag... with the impending buzz from the upcoming intergrated resorts, we MAY eventually see the arrival of yet another global brand name, the ORIGINAL Supperclub from Amsterdam, on our shores soon. Known for their world-class cuisines, countless top-notch CD releases, award-winning interior designs + art installations and of course, the originator of having beds in a bar. Many have tried to rip their concept off. Many have failed... ignoring their vision of... "an evening at Supperclub is successful when all your FIVE senses have been tickled". This should be interesting. It should crank up the F&B competition up several notches up with their nu-skool ideologies and operational concepts.
Insomnia?
Drifting... slowly...

Woke up. Turn on the Mac. Started up Ableton. Stared at it blankly for 10 minutes. Complete blank. Shut down. Not inspired or the very least bothered to do anything, especially after last night's "stale gig". Everything sounds so goddamn utterly stagnant. Try again tomorrow... as IF!
It's raining now and it's putting me in a melancholic mood. Slapped myself back out of it with a hot cup of coffee. I think I'm allegic to mornings.
Don't know what to do. Don't want to do anything that's got to do with ANY music at all. I think I'll go rent some DVDs and laze around a bit. But "birthday boy" is hogging the TV with his punting on horse races. Damn, I really need a place of my own! Hmm... guess I'll go watch the past few episodes of WWE Raw and Smackdown on the CPU... as they called it... real-time wrestling soup-opera.
Thankfully there's EPL tonight...
Manchester City vs Manchester Utd (derby so it can go either way)
Blackburn vs Arsenal (I'll skip this one)
Liverpool vs Chelsea (this one is going to be a feast)
And so begins my 3-day break from work. Tra-la-la! Maybe I'll have time to like expose even more stupidity... for example :
If you actually have the ability to see inbetween the lines instead of being PAWNED like the rest of the general Singapore public by the media's play of words... What has the release of anime episodes got to do with DVD sales? Read carefully again. Still don't get it? It's counter-intuitive. Odex saw a dramatic dip in sales because of the global trend in the drop of anime releases. The lesser titles you release, the lesser sales. Ain't it? Also, certain of these "best-selling" titles will never be released here due to censorship and other territorial technicalities.
Anyway, if the demand / trend for anime is no longer popular, isn't it obvious sales will drop? What to do next? Just like the music industry (which has still yet to grasp the full extent of the digital realm), go after the fans. Blame those anime downloaders, some of which happen to download stuff that are not licensed by Odex. Anyway, since I've a degree in legal matters pertaining to intellectual property rights, let me shed some light. The problem lies with the law enforcement system.
Under Singapore's law, copying is permitted for educational and news reporting purposes. In 2004, an amendment was made to include an open-ended exception to make it possible for copying - in whole or part - to be construed as fair use depending on five consideration factors.
1. The work copied is creative in nature or not.
2. How much is copied?
3. Copying for profit? (i.e. piracy)
4. Is the work obtainable within a reasonable time at an ordinary commercial price?
5. The effect of copying upon the work's potential market here.
If I was a full-fleged lawyer, I would present the case as such. Anime is considered creative work and fans copy the whole work, but they don't do it for profit. Article 38 of Japan's own copyright law allows parties to "distribute by wire a work already broadcast for non-profit purposes". Also, most popular anime titles take about half a year to be released locally and by then, they would have appeared on the internet via portals like YouTube (for a limited time), podcasts or the usual P2P networks. Uploaded by fans, obviously. And for NON-PROFIT PURPOSES! Also, by the time those titles are made available here, most of these anime fans would have either bought the imported copies from online distributors. These factors are consideration points for the poor sales as well. Point is, even if a particular title was downloaded, was it done so before the distribution rights was actually signed for the territory of Singapore? If it was before you actually owned the rights, technically the downloader(s) did not infringed on YOUR intellectual property!
Also, most of these new anime titles, when broadcasted on Japan television networks, were taped off directly from the TV (also known as "screeners"). Since the birth of the VHS (video cassette recorder), huge archives of almost anything imaginable have been taped by users worldwide. And now that the medium (VHS) is almost non-existence, there has never really been a law to control home-taping or any prohibition of home users passing their home-recordings around to their friends and etc. Well, technically, that's unauthorized distribution.
Despite the medium, sales of movies on tape, VCDs and DVD were never impacted by VHS even those such recordings exchange hands and etc. No one bothered to persue it as it'll only end up with expensive legal fees and an open-ended exception.
As with music copyright, our Parliament added this "open-ended exception" for fair use only in 2004. This was put in place as part of the negotiations for the US bilateral free trade agreement. To harmonise Singapore law with US law which carried such an exception, it was decided to incorporate it in our Copyright Act. It exists to protect the American consumer, now it does the same for the Singapore consumer. Sadly, our courts have yet to fully understand how this EXCEPTION holds. As with the historical past, whoever has the financial capability to win the legal battle, can and will bend the supposed law into their favour.
As with the recent Odex case, I do not see the court weigh in the five consideration factors with regards to the anime downloaders. I'm not saying that downloading activity is legal or not. That's really questionable if you've the money to argue otherwise. I'm saying that some of these anime (or even music) downloaders may actually been not even guilty of copyright infringement. Especially if the works are NOT represented here. So at the end of it all, if you actually think about it, who actually makes financial gains out of these cases? The problem lies with the legal system that recognizes the word "download" as a dirty word. It's failed to realise that there's more to it than just "right click save as". The legal system here, is sadly, nothing but legal terrorism.
Damn, I should have fully pursue my degree instead of ending up playing music to a room of musically-retarded free-loading "beautiful" drunks.

Here's an interesting dialogue I had with 3 foreign customers at the end of last night. Two of them being expats that have been here for almost 7 years.
Georgie : "We really loved the music tonight. Always loved this place when it was Liquid Room."
Me : "Thanks. I was with Liquid Room for a while too."
Georgie : "Oh yeah, I remember. No wonder you look familiar. You're... err... don't tell me. Yukun, right? Your Saturdays were mad! It was the talk of the town. We come here almost every week! But the club's a stark constrast now, comparing to what it was back then. It's really a damn shame."
Me : "What do you mean?"
Georgie : "I don't mean to sound rude but this freeflow for models really makes the club look desperate and cheap. It's obvious that they're here for the drinks and not the music. Back in Liquid Room, it was the other way round, wasn't it? The punters where more substantial."
Me : "Well, err..."
Georgie : "We did not know about this club. We happen to chance upon it! What's it called by the way?"
Me : "eM Studio."
Georgie : "Really, you people should get the word out because it's really such a crying shame! Great music but no one's around to enjoy it except the 3 of us. How do you keep your passion as a DJ, week in and out?"
Me : "Well, I try."
Georgie : "We had great nights with you back in Liquid Room. We had a good night despite the really dodgy crowd tonight. Fantastic music. But it's just such a waste, isn't it? Say, could we get you to play at some of our private parties?"
Truth be told, I don't really operate on PASSION anymore. Never did for a long time. I've stopped being passionate about it after join Onyx as the set-up / entertainment team. I'm just running on "second nature". Anyway, I thought it was really awkward for "outsiders" to have such an opinion. Then again, I'm not really that surprised because it's not the first time I've heard such sentiments from customers, as well as some local media people. Oh well, it's not that I haven't pointed out certain things before. Then again, to be completely honest, I've lost my self-coinfidence and belief in a lot of things. Even if the room is rammed, I doubt I have it anymore to deliver... me lost my mojo :(
*reminds self to remain under the radar*
New drink by Forrest Gump
And it's called...
Jim Toxic!
Confirm to knock you out for good!
* Forrest Gump works at our barOn a more "serious" note, I'll (may)be hibernating the next few days and working on the next Progressions Ableton megamix promo CD to be given away at the next gig. Hopefully I can still remember all the nifty editing tricks... but I seriously doubt I can top the Progressions NYE one. Not many great tunes out there now and I'm kind of in a very dull mood. But I'll try and see what I can whip up on the PowerMac... that has not been switched on for almost 3 months now. I'm sure there's a toadstool on the keyboard now. Hahahaha!
Today...
By the way, to the certain person (with good "Engrish") responsible for hiring Forrest Gump and for the "floating water restaurant", for God's sake please stop referring to our club as a "DISCO" to our patrons and what-nots. No one uses that term anymore after the passing of the mid-90s. It's just so last millenium and it's downright embarrassing, ok? And neither is it a "night club" (as you referred it to be several times). No wonder we've people coming up to ask for "retro" (besides other horrid public-loving genres). And we, I repeat, DON'T play "DISCO MUSIC upstairs".
But that's not as bad as one of the suppliers that I happen to know very well, coming up to tell me "Do disco's still exist? He's not very tuned in with the times, is he?"
I really don't know what to say in your defence except... "he's travolta-ish". Damn embarrassing if you ask me what I think about it. Representing your own product in the era of The Bee Gees. Obviously someone wasn't paying attention during our internal workshop on the various CLUB music.
Yeaaahhh... 3 days of break from work coming up! Wahoooooooo!
Excuse, table for how many?
Again, I don't mean to be nasty / rude / insensitive but...
... please be considerate and stop wanking!
Hahaha!
You can't see me!
After much consideration, thought and some insightful advise from my seniors as well as my peers in the industry, I've decided that in life, it's best to adopt "stealth mood" and to stay under the radar. Why? It's never good to be standing out in the open and making too much noise... enemies will take you out in a second. It's something I've learnt recently from a PSP game as well. Who said computer games are a waste of time?
I do apologize if I made too much unneccessary noise in the past or recently. Please pardon me for the lack of visibility from hereforth. I want to be a ninja... hiding in the shadows. And to strike a low-blow when everyone least expects. Hahahaha! Sneaky bastard!
To Mrs Audrey Goh (wife of Mel Tektile), I do not look like Ben Stiller at all! He's better looking but I'm much funnier than he is. I think you better consume less Hoegardens :p
